Kochi to Munnar to Varkala
About the experience
This is not a regular Kerala trip.
This is a slow, scenic journey through Kerala — from the old streets of Kochi to tea-covered mountains, misty villages, forests and spices, quiet backwaters, and finally the cliffs and beaches of Varkala.
We will travel, explore, eat, laugh, talk, journal, try new experiences, and make space for fresh thoughts and ideas with a small group of interesting people.
What is this trip about?
It is about giving yourself a change of place, people, and pace.
We will travel from Kochi to Munnar via Athirapally, explore the tea estates of Munnar, Thekkady, and Varkala, with offbeat spots like Kolukkumalai, Vattavada, and Veliyanad.
Along the way, we will explore, eat, laugh, talk, journal, try new experiences, and make space for fresh thoughts and ideas.
Maybe it’s a side hustle idea.
Maybe it’s a startup thought.
Maybe it’s a purpose discovery.
Maybe it’s just the version of you that wants to feel more alive again.
Itinerary
Route: Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady→ Varkala
Day 1 | 14 Oct | Arrival in Kochi
We begin in Kochi, Kerala's historic port city where old-world streets, colonial architecture, spice markets, art, cafés and contemporary culture come together.
Explore Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Jew Town, walk through its colourful streets, discover local food and settle into the rhythm of the journey.
This is where we'll meet, get to know each other, and begin our Becoming Journal journey.
Day 2 | 15 Oct | Kochi → Munnar
We leave the coast behind and begin climbing into Kerala's Western Ghats.
The landscape changes dramatically — winding roads, waterfalls, forests and endless green.
Arrive in Munnar, surrounded by tea plantations and mist-covered hills.
The afternoon is deliberately slow.
Tea. Views. Walks. Conversations.
Day 3 | 16 Oct | Explore Munnar
No early alarms. No rushing from one attraction to another.
Wake up to the mountains. Have a long breakfast. Walk through tea plantations. Find a little café. Read. Journal. Talk. Do nothing.
Day 4 | 17 Oct | Munnar — Kolukkumalai & Vattavada
One of the most beautiful days of the journey.
We wake up early and head towards Kolukkumalai for sunrise — one of the world's highest tea-growing regions.
Then we move towards Vattavada, a quieter mountain village known for its farms, orchards and dramatically beautiful landscapes.
This isn't about rushing from viewpoint to viewpoint.
It's about experiencing the mountains — walking through plantations, meeting local communities, eating something warm, and enjoying the landscape.
Day 5 | 18 Oct |Munnar → Thekkady
We leave the tea country and enter Kerala's forest belt.
Thekkady is a completely different side of Kerala — dense forests, wildlife, spice plantations and the Periyar landscape.
Depending on the final route and availability, we'll experience a spice plantation / forest experience, followed by a relaxed evening.
And perhaps a little Kalaripayattu or Kathakali.
Day 6 | 19 Oct | Thekkady→ Varkala (via Veliyanad)
Today we move from forests to water.
We head towards Veliyanad, away from the busier houseboat routes, for a more intimate experience of Kerala's backwaters.
Instead of spending a night on a houseboat, we'll take a small canoe/shikara through the narrow waterways, passing villages, homes, coconut groves and everyday Kerala life.
We'll stop for a local lunch before continuing towards Varkala.
By evening, the landscape changes again — backwaters give way to the Arabian Sea.
Day 7 | 20 Oct | Varkala
No early morning alarm.
No rushing.
Today is about slowing down.
Explore Varkala Cliff, walk along the beach, discover little cafés and shops, swim, read, talk, journal or simply do absolutely nothing.
For those who want to explore further, we can visit Kappil Beach and the surrounding backwaters.
And then — sunset over the Arabian Sea.
Our final evening together is about reflecting on the journey, the conversations we've had and perhaps the things we are taking back home.
Day 8 | 21 Oct | Varkala → Trivandrum | Departure
We leave Varkala in the morning and drop participants in Trivandrum.
There is no group sightseeing planned for the day, giving everyone flexibility based on their flight/train schedules.
Those with later departures can independently explore Trivandrum.
And then, we go home — hopefully with a little more clarity, a few new friends, beautiful memories, and something new to think about.
