The Story Behind the Food

Everyone cooks for their kids.

I started cooking for my Mom. ❤️

We lived in a joint family of nine, where Mom cooked for everyone, every single day.

I started helping her quite early.

Apparently, the first thing I ever made entirely by myself was an evening cup of tea for her when I was only four.

At home, we eat Satvik food — vegetarian meals without onion and garlic.

Growing up, that meant my culinary curiosity often had to look beyond our kitchen. I'd explore food in restaurants across the city, discover regional specialities while travelling, and occasionally enjoy a dessert made with eggs. Shhhh… Mummy ko mat batana! 🤫

Then I'd come home and try recreating those dishes for Mom — savouries without onion and garlic, desserts without eggs.

And Mom, who loves cooking just as much, would take my experiments and make them her own.

I still remember introducing her to Himachali Siddu.

Since then, she's created her own versions with different dal fillings, paneer fillings and even chocolate!

Cooking started as introducing the world to my Mom, but somewhere along the way, cooking became many things to me.

A way to celebrate the places and cultures I have traveled to.

A way to avoid attending to guests while still attending to them #iykyk ;)

An art therapy that made difficult days feel lighter.

And, most of all, a way of expressing love to the people who matter to me.

Today, as the founder of Alter Ego Community, I want to bring a little of that love to the people who've become part of my story.

This Home Table is my way of saying thank you.

So, what's cooking?

Your favourite foods. Global, desi, familiar, exotic — the dishes you love ordering when you eat out or discovering when you travel.

Except, there's a little twist.

Everything is Satvik.

No onion. No garlic. No eggs. And no shortcuts.

The most challenging — and perhaps the most beautiful — part of Satvik cooking is that every masala, every paste, and every dish has to be made from scratch at home. No relying on ready-made, preservative-laden alternatives.

Just fresh ingredients, a little ingenuity, plenty of experimentation and lots of love.

Because Satvik food doesn't have to mean limited choices.

And making something without an ingredient shouldn't mean compromising on flavour.
