The Psychology Behind Anti-Immigrant Protests Around the World (and what it reveals about us)
Anti-immigration protests are rising worldwide, but the reasons run deeper than politics or economics. They reflect core human needs from Maslow’s hierarchy—safety, belonging, and esteem—combined with psychological biases like in-group vs out-group and zero-sum thinking. While natives protest out of fear of loss, immigrants face stress, exclusion, and identity conflict. Building stronger self-identity can reduce hostility and create more inclusive societies.
